The Path Evaporates Behind You

A machine trained to produce the result without the process hands you a path that feels almost the same as thought, without the effort... and a path that cost nothing does not exist when you turn around.

The Path Evaporates Behind You

The person who cannot come back

Most of us know of someone by now, or we know someone who does, a person who started talking to an AI and ended up somewhere their entire prior life would have rejected... and they are calm about it, that is the part nobody expects. They are not raving, they are settled, and the conviction does not respond to argument at all.

You cannot walk them back, and everyone discovers that first. It deserves more attention than it gets. When a person reasons their way into being wrong, there is a path, you can ask how they got there, and somewhere in the chain is the step that gave, and finding it together is how the belief comes down, a fair portion of what friendship is for, honestly. These newer cases do not have the chain. Ask how they arrived and you get the destination described again, more conviction, better vocabulary, nothing behind them to walk on.

So I want to hold the question of why they believe it, because there is a prior question that gets skipped... what kind of road did they take to get there? It turns out there are two ways to arrive at a conclusion, and only one of them exists after you have used it. To see the difference you have to start further back than the machines, with how a concept becomes possible for a person at all.

How a concept becomes possible

A concept becomes possible by overcoming resistance. I mean that mechanically, not poetically. An idea does not enter a mind by being stated to it, it enters by structurally navigating what is already there, and what is already there pushes back, the new thing either coheres with the existing structure or it contests the existing structure and wins, and the contest is the process. There is no third way in.

What the contest runs against is grounding, and grounding is accumulated experience, the record of what has already proven it can be depended on. A person reasons from that record whether they intend to or not. The same structure is there at the level of the neurons, which fire through previous paths of what was possible in prior experience, constraints built from what has been lived, and new information can expand or modify those constraints, but only by navigating the previous paths coherently, and the more accumulated paths a new idea confirms across, the faster it takes hold, because it is being tested against everything adjacent to it at once. Depth of experience is not decoration on a mind. It is the test bench.

And then the same contest again, outside the individual. To this point in history a person has had to test their ideas against other people, state the reasoning, prove it, survive the dissent, and that contrast against a field of competing concepts is what stabilizes which concepts are admissible. Not admissible by some arbitrary ruleset, admissible from a structural grounding of what is actually possible. The disagreement was never an obstacle to knowing things, it is how the knowing gets load tested.

So reasoning is expensive on purpose, and the expense is not waste. What it purchases is a concept that can be depended on, and a road that exists behind you, you can walk it again, someone else can walk it with you, and the step that gave can be found because building the road left a record of every step.

How the machine arrives at a result

An AI is trained probabilistically to achieve a result. It is not trained to structurally achieve a result. Those sound close and they are not close, and the gap between them is where everything in this essay lives.

The training works backward from outputs. The model is adjusted, over enormous volumes of examples and feedback, until what it produces resembles what a good answer looks like, and resemblance is the whole objective, there is nothing in the process that requires the answer to have been reached by any admissible route, because no route is being built at all. What comes out is an arbitrary path of probability rather than a negotiated structural one. I wrote that sentence in another essay about where these systems get their sense of what matters, and it matters more here.

This is what a hallucination actually is, and the word has misled almost everyone. A hallucination is not a lie and not a malfunction, it is a result achieved probabilistically without being grounded in an admissible methodology... and the uncomfortable half of the definition is that the correct outputs are produced exactly the same way. The system that gets it right and the system that invents a court case are running one process. Nothing failed. There was never a structural path under any of it.

So what the machine hands you is a path of logical-sounding language that feels almost the same as experiential thought, without the effort. And by now the problem with that should be visible, because we just established what the effort is. The effort is the grounding. A conclusion that arrives without it is not a cheaper version of the same thing, it is a different thing wearing the same words.

The borrowed path

Go back to the person from the beginning, the one with no chain behind them, and the mystery is gone.

They took a road made of the machine's fluency and their own agreement, and neither ingredient stores anything. The machine never built a path, it produced resemblances of one, and the person never built a path either, because agreeing costs nothing and what costs nothing leaves nothing... two evaporations, nested. When they turn around to check their reasoning there is nothing to check, reasoning was never the vehicle. The way back is not lost. It was never built, by anyone.

The rest of the arrangement just removes the checks that would have caught it, and it is worth one paragraph, because none of it is anyone's plan. The models are tuned by people grading whether answers look right, often on material they cannot evaluate, and to a grader who cannot check the substance, looking right and being agreeable are nearly the same property, so agreement gets absorbed into the machine's sense of correctness. The products around the models are tuned toward whether you stay, and agreeable replies keep you, so it is rewarded a second time. And what the whole environment shows you is assembled per person from what has held your attention so far, which means the dissent that used to arrive on its own now has to get past a filter built, without anyone deciding it, to soften exactly that. Every step reasonable. The composite is a companion that cannot do the one thing a walking partner is for.

Who the counterfeit finds

The path feels off. That is the signal, and who can feel it is worth being precise about, because the caution is not evenly distributed and it is not a matter of intelligence.

The ability to sense that a chain of logic is wrong is itself built from resistance, it is the accumulated residue of every idea you tested and lost, every certainty that experience took back, every argument where the other person turned out to be right. A person carrying that record checks an exciting conclusion against empirical experience almost involuntarily. A person without it, a young mind, or any mind that has not yet had to prove its reasoning against dissent, does not have the reflex, and there is nothing in them for the offness to register against. And excitement finishes the job, because the sense of having discovered something that changes everything is one of the strongest states a mind gets, and in the absence of a single dissenting voice the new ideas simply get occupied as if they were valid. Historically the dissenting voice arrived whether you wanted it or not. Now the environment can be arranged so that it does not, and increasingly it is.

There is a name in circulation for all of this, AI psychosis, and having walked the mechanism you can now see what the name does. A psychosis is a fact about a mind, so the label files these cases under the person, something in them gave way... and the quiet service that filing performs is that it excludes you, the reader, who knows perfectly well you are not psychotic. The label is right about the seriousness, these people are genuinely somewhere, and the people who love them are genuinely losing them. It is wrong about the location of the mechanism. A name like AI psychosis reassures everyone sane, and the mechanism does not select for madness. It selects for missing grounding, and nobody is fully grounded everywhere.

What can be depended on

The standard advice at this point would be a list of habits, and the habits mostly describe checks a person runs on a path, and the situation is a person standing on something that is not one. The useful test is older and simpler, and it needs no theory of machines to apply. What did this conclusion cost? Where was the resistance, who dissented, what did I have to overcome, what would prove it wrong and did I go look. A concept that has never met resistance is not yet a concept, it is a candidate, and occupying a candidate is optional, and the option is easiest to decline early, while the occupying is still visible as a choice.

And the same test rehabilitates some arrangements we have spent twenty years engineering away. A friend who thinks you are wrong and says so is stored resistance in another person's keeping. A discipline with standards you did not set, an institution that will not adopt your framing, the world's flat refusal to care what you have concluded, every one of these got filed under friction, and friction is the property that builds roads. We did not notice what the inconvenience was for, because it was consistently boring, and it worked.

None of this requires the machines to get worse. Every component is improving, the models more fluent, the products more responsive, the grading more refined... and the composite keeps handing people results without process, paths without ground, thought without effort. The old discipline was to watch where you are going, and it still applies. The newer one is to turn around now and then and confirm there is something behind you, a step that cost something, a joint that survived an argument, and if there is nothing back there, to notice it while the noticing is still yours. Whether anything that can only agree with you can be meaningfully consented to at all is its own question... and it is next.
